The MT-LB multi-purpose light armored towing vehicle) is a Soviet/Russian amphibious auxiliary armored vehicle which was developed in the late 1960s. Due to its very low specific ground pressure and wide tracks the vehicle has outstanding off-road capabilities and is able to operate in extremely difficult terrain conditions including swamps, deep snow and loose sand. The MT-LB is fully amphibious and is propelled in the water by its tracks. In addition to its primary roles as an artillery tractor and prime mover, the MT-LB has been widely used as an armored personnel carrier, command vehicle, ambulance, recovery vehicle and as a mounting platform for various weapon systems (anti-aircraft guns, anti-tank missiles, mortars, etc.). More than 55,000 vehicles of the MT-LB family have been produced, and it remains in service with dozens of countries around the world.
