The MAZ-545 Heavy Military Tractor with CHMZAP-5247G Semi-trailer represents a Soviet heavy-duty military transport combination developed during the Cold War for the transportation of main battle tanks, armoured vehicles and other heavy military equipment. The MAZ-545 was an experimental development related to the MAZ-537 family, designed to provide exceptional towing capability and mobility across challenging terrain. It featured an eight-wheel-drive (8×8) configuration, a powerful V12 multifuel diesel engine and a heavy-duty transmission, enabling it to tow substantial loads over long distances and across unpaved roads.

The CHMZAP-5247G was a heavy-duty, low-loader semi-trailer designed specifically for transporting tracked military vehicles and other oversized equipment. Manufactured by the Chelyabinsk Machine-Building Plant for Automotive Trailers, it featured a reinforced steel chassis, a low-profile loading platform, two rear axles and a gooseneck-style connection to the tractor. Its rear loading ramps allowed tanks and armoured vehicles to be driven onto the platform, while the low deck height helped maintain stability during transportation. With an approximate payload capacity of 50 tonnes, the trailer was suitable for carrying a wide range of Soviet armoured vehicles.

Together, the heavy tractor and semi-trailer provided an effective means of transporting tanks, infantry fighting vehicles, armoured personnel carriers and specialised military engineering equipment without placing unnecessary wear on their engines and running gear. The combination formed an important part of Soviet military logistical infrastructure, supporting the movement of armoured formations between military bases, training areas and operational locations. Its powerful engine, robust construction and substantial carrying capacity made this type of transporter particularly valuable to Soviet and other Warsaw Pact armed forces throughout the Cold War.
