To reduce the huge numerical superiority of the Soviet armoured vehicles, the German decided to use cheap and easy to manufacture self-propelled anti-tank guns. In 1942 an order to design a universal carrier of all types of weapons was submitted, under the name Waffenträger. Most models designed by companies partaking in the request did not get past wooden models. In the second half of 1944 Rheinmetall-Borsig completed its prototype Waffenträger. The chassis was an elongated Panzerkampfwagen 38(t), and the wheels were spread out as no more wheels were added.
