The 542nd Grenadier Division was a German infantry division of World War II . The division was formed on July 7, 1944 at the Stablack military training area in East Prussia . On August 12, 1944, the division was renamed the 542nd Infantry Division . On October 9, 1944, the division received the final designation 542. Volksgrenadier-Division . The division fought on the Narew Front and in April 1945 it was taken prisoner by the Soviets on the Hela Peninsula in West Prussia .
