The FV4007 (A41) Centurion was the primary main battle tank of the British Army during the post–World War II period. Introduced in 1945, it became one of the most successful post-war tank designs, remaining in production into the 1960s and seeing combat service into the 1980s. The chassis was adapted for a variety of specialized roles, and many of these variants remained in service for decades. The Centurion was highly regarded for its excellent balance of armour protection, mobility, and firepower. The Centurion Mk 5, which entered production in 1955, incorporated several notable design changes, including Browning machine guns fitted to the coaxial and commander’s cupola mounts, deletion of the turret rear escape door, a reshaped turret roof, removal of the 2-inch (51 mm) bomb thrower, an additional stowage bin on the glacis, and a guide roller added to the track run, bringing the vehicle’s weight to approximately 51 tons. Between 1962 and 1965, seventeen Mk 5 tanks armed with 20-pounder guns were converted into dozer tanks by fitting adapted blades taken from old M4 Sherman dozers. After ammunition stocks for the 20-pounder were depleted, the guns were removed and the turrets were fixed facing to the rear. The smoke grenade launchers were repositioned to what had become the front of the turret, and spotlights were added to facilitate night-time dozer operations.
